Somaliland Tourism Industry

Since it has declared itself an independent state in 1991, the Republic of Somaliland has achieved quite a positive leap with little help (if there is any) from the outside world. And while the country's economy remains fragile, it cannot be denied that the unrecognised government is adamantly and proudly rebuilding itself from the rubbles. One of the promising scheme that the government has seen as a way to promote the country, to let the world know it exist, is by inviting foreign tourists to visit the it in order to increase awareness about its existence, as well as boost tourist activities.

Meanwhile, one of the main hindrances preventing the country from growing, remaining hidden, is that because it is not in tourist maps. In fact, you will never find it on any map at all. What is worse is that the country does not exist, based on international opinion. Well Somaliland is not a unique case, because as a matter of fact, there are a dozen of self-declared independent states that the UN and other community of countries do not recognise. And in the case of Somaliland, it is still considered a part of Somalia. But when you visit the country, it is very different from Somalia. Where there is social discord in Somalia, there is peace in Somaliland. While tourist will constantly fear for their safety in Somalia, they can confidently walk around the streets of Somaliland without a thought of danger, because no foreign nationals are allowed by the government to roam around the country without a paid body guard (who could be an armed soldier or a local police). Hence, if there is any place in the world that will easily come close to your heart, it is Somaliland. The determination, inspiration and spirit of its people are worth noting. There is nothing really significant to see in Somaliland, but its people are definitely the greatest asset that will push its tourism industry forward.
