Usually, when you think of a country that has experienced violent civil unrest, what will come into your mind is a picture of derelict buildings, militias on the street, and people finding something to be salvaged from the rubbles. Sorry to disappoint you, but the country of Somaliland, particularly its capital city Hargeisa, does not fit the image typically portrayed of a war-ravaged country. No, not any more.

After also almost two decades of declaring its independence, which is unfortunately not recognised by the international community, the country has slowly rebuilt itself. The government is doing all its effort to make the country a safe place for all its citizens and visitors. And in fact, if there is any place in the world where a foreigner can safely walk on the shopping street with a bulky wallet in his pocket, it would certainly be Somaliland. We are not trying to tell you to totally let down your guard during your trip to the county. What we are trying to show you here is that the country is safe for travellers and shoppers.

Now, you might wonder how an African country becomes a safe place of travellers who are walking for a shopping. Well, if you wade down the main streets of Hargeisa, you will notice numerous money changers trading in open tables with stacks of local and foreign currencies. You will also find gold traders selling their gold out in the open street without fear of theft. In addition, if you do not know how to count your Shillings, you do not have to fear about being taken advantage by traders. In the markets and shops, you can safely give the cashier a handful of notes, and she will count the correct amount for you and hand you back the extra. How about that for shopping safety and security?
